It is said ‘you can’t go home again’, but after a cancelled wedding and the death of her father, Sandy Martin makes the decision to do just that when she returns to her hometown of Bradford Mills. She buys her grandmother’s old house, and in the process of remodeling the house with an old friend, Tom Brannigan, Sandy discovers her house has a story to tell. While she continues an internal struggle to find the faith and relationship with God she'd had in the past, she begins a journey to find not only her history, but that of another.

This is a true ‘coming home’ story that will touch your heart.

Basically, this book is about a diary found in a hidden room presumed to be part of the Underground Railroad. I so very much liked the way this was written. Microfiche records led to interesting information both confirming the identity of the diary's author, which led back to where she was born, and forward to her family in the present. This book does not glorify slavery nor do we get lectures. It is a realistic search to get the diary to her descendants.

I couldn't put this book down and read it all the way through.

The Whispering Sentinel edition by Ruth Kyser Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I could not put this book down. This author has moved to the top of my favorites list. I love the story of life change and forgiveness, intertwined with American history. Her stories always points the characters, thus the readers as well to Christ.
This book breathts Ruth Keyser. On the surface it seems simple story but it takes a surprising turn. American history is told differently from what is thought in school. Reading it, your spiritual life will be enriched. Be aware, you might lose some sleep over it since you don't want to put it down till the last page is read. I know, been there, done that.
This isn't just a sappy love story. It's a fascinating mystery intertwined with a backslidden young woman finding her way back home to God and the people who truly love her. The bits of history are fun and the relationships are so believable.
Wow! Couldn't put it down once I started it. Well written, wonderful story with historical highlights as well. Highly recommend it.
There was not one thing I disliked about this story. Well written and researched. God's forgiveness and love expressed. Glad that Dracy's story was told the history alone will hold your interest. If you have ever gotten to visit a underground railroad house it makes you understand how much freedom meant to these precious people also how important it was to be a place of refuge for them. Read and enjoy.
This was a wonderful story. Fiction, yes - but could have happened - at least part actually did happen to some of the slaves.
A beautiful story of a young woman, who had been away from God & her moving, buying her grandmothers old house - and finding a hidden room.
This is a romance story but also includes this woman's search in finding out about this room & the diary that she found there.
An adventure you feel like you are there with her.
This is a cute story that turns into something more than you would initially expect. I always enjoy stories that involve remodels of old homes, but this one has an angle that's not often explored. I don't want to give too much away, but I think I can safely say that in the process of the remodel Sandy unearths the secret history of her old home, and it takes her on a journey she never could've imagined.

The storyline itself was good; definitely engaging enough to hold my attention and to make me curious to see how everything turned out. It was interesting to see the relationship develop between Sandy and her contractor, Tom, especially in light of their single failed date 8 years prior. I do admit that the writing style was a bit too wordy for my taste and some of the dialogue occasionally seemed a bit unnatural, but neither of these issues were enough to stop me from reading as I was quite curious to see how the story would unfold and ultimately end.

Overall I do feel the book would be stronger if it was tightened up and shortened a bit; it seemed slightly too long for the amount of story that was covered. But, if you're looking to relax with a novel that's not overly-fast-paced, this just might be the ticket you're looking for! I can easily see this being turned into a Hallmark-style movie... and you know what, sometimes that's just the type of story I'm in the mood for.
